The Fairfax Library Foundation’s Scholarship Program was established to enhance the capability of the Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) staff and volunteers to deliver high quality service to the citizens of Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax by assisting in their development.

Undergraduate Scholarships are awarded each year to well-qualified individuals. The Foundation will determine the number of scholarships awarded each year dependent on the availability of well-qualified candidates and funds. However, the number awarded will usually not exceed ten (10). Each award is for an amount up to $1,500, and it is a merit-based scholarship.

Additional awards, including for higher amounts (usually $2,000), may be granted dependent on funding by sponsors for the awards.

The undergraduate program is a significant source of funds for current FCPL employees and volunteers to obtain financial support for achieving their higher-level education goals. The Library System benefits from the enhanced qualifications and skills of employees and volunteers. Library managers are strongly encouraged to support their staff and volunteers in applying for the scholarships.

The undergraduate program does not focus solely on applicants who intend to pursue a library career – any career choice is eligible for consideration. The program does, however, seek to accomplish some library-related objectives such as:

  • Fostering a greater awareness of libraries and the opportunities they provide for employment and volunteer service,
  • Providing volunteer assistance to libraries from award recipients as they complete any volunteer service required, and
  • Creating a nexus between the Fairfax Library Foundation, the financial assistance they provide through the scholarships and their mission which is to provide supplementary support to the Fairfax County Public Library System.

The application for an undergraduate scholarship must be received by January 15 and is available to:

  • Current employees and volunteers of the FCPL System.
  • Residents of Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax who intend to complete an application to perform volunteer hours in the FCPL System — upon receipt of a scholarship, up to a maximum of sixty (60) hours of volunteer service during a 12-month period may be required.

Scholarships are awarded on a merit basis without regard to race, gender, religion, age, physical disability, or sexual orientation. The Foundation considers the merit of each application carefully, and factors evaluated will include:

  • Academic excellence in high school, college or university courses,
  • Specific competencies or characteristics that show their potential for academic excellence, and
  • Potential to work or volunteer in a library environment, public or private.

Each applicant will be notified of the Foundation’s decision within six (6) to eight (8) weeks of the closing date. Foundation decisions are final and not subject to appeal.
