Early Literacy Grant Award from MAXIMUS Foundation

Fairfax Library Foundation Receives Grant Award from MAXIMUS Foundation for Ready to Read Early Literacy Outreach Program

Fairfax, VA – Fairfax Library Foundation is honored to receive a grant award from MAXIMUS Foundation to support the Ready to Read Early Literacy Outreach program. This is the second year MAXIMUS Foundation has made this generous gift. Support from MAXIMUS Foundation supports the purchase of 750 books per year for underprivileged preschoolers in Head Start classrooms in Fairfax County. Ready to Read distributed 28,368 picture books last year during monthly storytime visits.

“The MAXIMUS Foundation is proud to present Fairfax Library Foundation with a grant in honor of its commitment to improving the lives of those it serves in the community,” said John Boyer, MAXIMUS Foundation Chairman. “Through its innovative services and solutions, Fairfax Library Foundation’s values continue to align with those of the MAXIMUS Foundation – helping disadvantaged populations while supporting individuals’ and families’ pursuit of self-sufficiency and improved health care outcomes. On behalf of the MAXIMUS Foundation, I am so grateful for Fairfax Library Foundation’s dedicated work.”

Ready to Read and other programs supported by Fairfax Library Foundation rely on generous gifts of community partners like MAXIMUS Foundation, who share our values to support the disadvantaged in our county. The goal of Ready to Read is to make sure every child in the county is prepared to read by Kindergarten, and this achieved through monthly storytimes at more than 120 preschools and daycares, targeting those children who cannot or do not visit the library. Picture books are distributed at each storytime for children to take home and keep, often representing the only books in the home. Ready to Read also models appropriate early literacy behaviors and techniques for child care providers to enable them to support success for the children in their care, and promotes awareness of the free public library resources available to all preschool children, their families and child care providers.

“We are grateful for a partner like MAXIMUS Foundation who shares our commitment to early literacy for all in our community,” says Abigail Fine, Director of Development for Fairfax Library Foundation. “Having the continuing support makes a big difference for the program.” The best testimonials come from the children at the Ready to Read storytimes. An Early Literacy staff member shared:

“One of the child care centers I visit often has the children outside before I arrive and I have to pass the playground to get to the front door.  As I walk, the children come running up to the fence, calling to me and asking, “What story are we reading?” “Did you bring Rumpus?” (my monster puppet), “Did you bring us another book?”  It’s so rewarding to see their enthusiasm for books and reading and to know that enthusiasm will help motivate them to someday learn to read.”
