Art in the Pages
Finding Beauty in Reading Through Art in the Pages
Bringing a love for art and reading together, Art in the Pages is Fairfax County’s first public art project. Meant to highlight the Fairfax Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, All Fairfax Reads, and the Fall for the Book, this project was made possible by generous sponsors like Verizon.
Designs were submitted by local artists, transforming four-foot high sculptures of open books into beautiful monuments to local themes and history.
Since 2008, Art in the Pages sculptures have been placed outside of library branches, schools, and businesses in Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax. The design unveiling reception took place at Charles and Lynda Robb’s home, followed by the Paint-In event in which the sculptures were displayed at the old library building in the City of Fairfax. At the Art in the Pages final reception, miniature statuettes were auctioned.
One statue sponsored by Visit Fairfax is on display at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton. Another, titled The Book of Tumaini, is located at the Hopkins House James & Juliette McNeil Preschool.
Art in the Pages was the first public statue art initiative in Fairfax, Virginia, and marks an initiative to bolster city libraries. The engagement of local artists allowed for a platform for local talent, and showcased skills valuable to the community.
